Trinity College currently relies on a number of legacy Metropolitan Area Network (Metro) links provided by Eir (eirevro) to support connectivity between a number of satellite sites and the Campus island. These circuits form part of the underlying network infrastructure supporting network services across the Trinity estate.

"The contracting authority intends to continue procuring metropolitan connectivity services from Eir (eirevro) for a limited period while a strategic review and phased replacement programme is undertaken. The existing services are delivered over proprietary legacy infrastructure that cannot be replicated through a straightforward like- for-like procurement. Replacement would require significant redesign, capital investment, construction and migration activities, together with detailed assessment of operational resilience requirements. To ensure continuity of service and avoid risks to critical operational sites, the authority considers it necessary to maintain the existing Eir services while developing and implementing a future connectivity strategy over a period of approximately four to five years. This approach will facilitate a controlled migration to modern connectivity solutions following completion of the required technical, operational and financial evaluations."
