Overview

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s National Metrology Institute, implements the project “Upgrading of Quality Infrastructure in Africa II” on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project aims to strengthen quality infrastructure in Africa’s pharmaceutical sector by supporting regulatory systems, harmonizing quality standards, and improving access to safe, effective, and high-quality medical products. The African Union Commission is the project’s political partner. A key partner is the African Medicines Agency (AMA), a specialized agency of the African Union established under the AMA Treaty. AMA supports African Union Member States and National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) in strengthening regulatory systems, promoting regulatory harmonization, reliance, and mutual recognition, while advancing local pharmaceutical manufacturing and health innovation. Headquartered in Kigali, Rwanda, AMA coordinates continental regulatory collaboration, capacity building, pharmacovigilance, quality management, market surveillance, and emergency preparedness in close cooperation with AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and international partners. The Embedded Expert will support the operationalization of AMA’s continental regulatory coordination mandate while contributing to PTB-supported activities aligned with AMA’s strategic priorities and approved work plans. The expert will be institutionally embedded within AMA under its administrative supervision, while maintaining close technical coordination with PTB. The role focuses on strengthening regulatory coordination, supporting the implementation of strategic initiatives, and contributing to the development of technical tools, knowledge products, and monitoring systems. All outputs developed during the assignment remain the intellectual property of the African Medicines Agency.
