Overview

Ballylickey is a small village located on the N71 National Secondary Route approximately 6 kilometres north of Bantry in County Cork. The condition of the N71 carriageway in the vicinity of Ballylickey has deteriorated over time and has been identified as a pavement scheme, which is currently at design stage. Safety issues were brought to the attention of the National Roads Design Office by Ballylickey Community Association. The main road safety concerns are the lack of pedestrian facilities and the high vehicular speed passing through the village.A Feasibility and Options report was prepared by the Cork National Roads Office for the N71 Ballylickey Road Safety Improvement Scheme. The findings of this report determined that the introduction of pedestrian facilities along with traffic calming measures was chosen as the preferred solution. The provision of a continuous footpath will create a safer environment for vulnerable road users and improve connectivity along the extents of the scheme. The Feasibility and Options report was approved by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and this scheme has received Gateway 1 Approval to proceed in accordance with TII Standard GE STY 01037. This scheme will now need to be progressed by a Technical Advisor to construction Contract Award stage, including preparation of the Contract Documents and the preparation of the Tender Assessment Report for Cork County Council. The Technical Advisors will be required to carry out all the services listed in this brief and to provide all deliverables required. The proposed length of this safety scheme is approximately 1km.
