The speed currently going through New Twopothouse village on the N20 primary national route is quite high and will require significant intervention to reduce it. The preferred option for this location is a comprehensive traffic calming scheme along the full length of the village. The proposed interventions will promote traffic calming on the approach to New Twopothouse and maintain reduced speeds through the village. It will also improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and enhance the urban environment in line with best practice guidelines. It will encourage modal shift towards walking and cycling, particularly for short trips. The provision of off-road cycle/footpath tracks will create a safer environment for vulnerable road users in New Twopothouse. It is recommended to undertake the traffic calming scheme under a phased approach, commencing with the refurbishment of the existing pedestrian crossing which will include the addition of a traffic island halfway on the crossing together with new traffic signals. It is also proposed to reduce the wide carriageway width at the village core. This can be achieved by removing the left turn deceleration lane for both junctions (R581 and L1205). The combination of these physical measures, signage, and road markings will enhance driver awareness, reduce the risk of accidents, and create a safer environment for vulnerable road users using the improved pedestrian crossing. Construction work for this initial phase is subject to TII approval of the design report, the statutory process and funding availability. TII approval has also been received to appoint a Technical Advisor to develop the detailed design and construction contract documents for all aspects of the N20 New Twopothouse Road Improvement Scheme.
